Testing Waste and Recycling

Yesterday we spent a few hours at the Customer First office in Brighouse user testing the wireframes for the Waste and recycling redevelopment. There are no funds available for any formal testing and we relied on the willingness of the public to get involved and help.

I recommend taking any opportunity to put designs and prototypes in front of the end users. It’s very easy to become detached from customers and focus more on demands from internal customers and colleagues. It was a couple hours well spent, which highlighted a few problems.

The top findings were:
Every customer referred to the Household waste and recycling centres as ‘the tip’
The label ‘Special collection’ meant something different to everyone and certainly not what was intended.
‘Find your collection day’ One of the main user tasks wasn’t easily achieved.
The label ‘Bring sites’ wasn’t understood.

Calderdale’s new sports and fitness site

Calderdale customers can now quickly and easily find information about venues, activities, times and prices. Information is managed by a single source and less likely to go out of date. The activity search includes information from Calderdale Sports facilities, Mixenden activity centre as well as community sports groups and clubs. Since launch the traffic to the site has been very strong, and we’re witnessing a steady and encouraging improvement in customer satisfaction levels.
